US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that American military forces are ready to launch a large-scale attack if the Iranian government attempts to assassinate him. In a social media post, Trump declared that "1,000 missiles are ready and loaded" against Iran, with "thousands" more ready to follow.
"One thousand missiles are ready to fire and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands more ready to be launched immediately afterward, should the Iranian government carry out the threat, made in many corners of the world, to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting president of the United States of America — in this case, me," Trump wrote. He further stated that orders have already been given and that US Armed Forces are prepared to "decimate and completely destroy all areas of Iran" for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension. The president ended the message with "Praise be to Allah."
The post came days after Iranian government supporters chanted slogans calling for Trump's death during the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. On Thursday (July 9), The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel had shared new intelligence with the US which, according to Israeli officials, indicated an Iranian plan to kill Trump.
Iran has for years promised to retaliate against Trump for the killing of General Qassem Soleimani, a commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, who was killed in a US airstrike ordered by the then-president in January 2020. US authorities have announced accusations at various times related to alleged Iranian plans to assassinate Trump. Iran denies involvement in such conspiracies.
